Animals of War Challenge 2024

During the First World War millions of animals were utilised for war work, and creatures great and small were a day-to-day part of most soldiers’ lives. Horses, dogs, and pigeons were used extensively in communication and transportation roles, whilst mascots and pets provided troops with a touchstone to reality and helped to maintain morale. Some of these animals were provided in an official capacity, whilst others were adopted unofficially by men or units to carry out specific roles. Animals also appeared in unwanted ways, with pests such as rats, flies, and lice a constant source of anguish. Although animals have been used in warfare for millennia, the First World War was the first conflict where animals were widely veteranised and their contribution memorialised alongside that of humans.

We will donate 15% of every entry to the military animal charity warpaws.

What do i have to do to complete the challenge?

This is a 'one-off' activity challenge, you have the option of 2k, 5k, 10k, half, or full marathon. Once you have completed your challenge simply fill in your submission link, and you have finished!

What is a virtual challenge? A virtual challenge can done from any location you choose. You can run, jog, walk, cycle, swim, use of a wheelchair - whatever you choose and however you choose to complete a distance. There is no restriction on discipline. We aim to be as inclusive as impossible.

Submitting and Claiming your Medal

You will be emailed a separate link / web page when you sign up, to upload your progress as and when you want to. Your medal will be sent on purchase. For this challenge it's a one off submission, please complete submission link after your activity.'

Checking Your Progress

We have a real-time results system with instant tables, sort-able by age, gender and Country. We also have live tracking 'journeys' with fully interactive maps for our annual and seasonal longer challenges!
